Sierra Electric Experienced Outage Due to Blown Arrester, Scheduled Planned Outage for Repair

Elephant Butte, Wednesday, September 14, 2016

On Monday, September 12th, shortly after 9:00 am, Sierra Electric Cooperative members in Elephant Butte, Monticello, Cuchillo, Winston, Chloride and Poverty Creek lost power for just over two hours when an arrester at the Cuchillo substation failed (see photo above).  Sierra Electric crews immediately responded to the event and were able to clear the blown arrester to restore power.

To replace the blown arrester, Sierra Electric conducted a planned outage from Midnight Wednesday, September 14 thru 2:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 15th.  The outage was conducted during these hours to have the least possible impact to Sierra’s members.  Earlier in the week, Sierra contacted members who have identified themselves as having medical or special conditions that require electricity and notified them early about the outage in order to give them time to make arrangements for care.
