Sierra Electric experienced a major outage early in the morning June 22, 2017. The outage lasted approximately 2 hours (2:00 a.m. to 4:15 a.m.) and affected our members in the Elephant Butte-Winston circuit. Work being performed at our Cuchillo substation required that the Elephant Butte-Winston circuit and Switch Yard-Engle circuit loads be tied into one protection device. A fault on that protection device caused all members on both circuits to be affected by the outage. The Sierra Electric line crew had a larger than usual area to trouble shoot to find the cause and make the repair to restore power. This outage was not caused by the scheduled work, but rather an unforeseen cause. As always, it is impossible to prevent power outages caused by the weather or animal contact, but Sierra Electric strives to quickly respond to unplanned outages to restore power to our members as quickly and safely as possible.
